CONCELHO DE TAVIRA

Tavira is an attractive and historic town on the Gilao River. The town was originally Islamic, but in 1242 it was taken by King Paia Peres. It became an important port, but declined due to a number of economic and geograhic factors, including silting of the river.

There is an ancient castle, 18th century buildings and a local market. The local fishing boats still supply the town's restaurants (...).

TAVIRA - eine Stadt im Windschatten

Das Venedig Portugals wird es immer wieder genannt. Dabei hat das am Fluß Gilão liegende Tavira keine Kanäle und auch Gondelfahrten bietet es nicht. Die Grandiosität der italienischen Lagunenstadt sollte in Tavira also nicht gesucht werden. Tavira hat andere Reize.
