ALGARVE - TAVIRA, NORA VELHA |
 |
 |
The best place to use as a base for
exploring the area is the town of
Tavira, an atmospheric, working tuna-fishing port with an
important history. Accommodation can be hard to find: ask in the
tourist office if you have not booked. Stroll around, try
the local speciality (fresh tuna with onion) or a
cataplana, have a drink or two... The town has a nice
ruined castle, and twenty-one churches. (...) |

Tavira
Tavira is a charming town, which lies 20km northeast of Olhão.
Tavira was developed during the Moorish occupation and became
one of the largest and most important ports in the Algarve
during the 15th century. Due to the gradual silting of the Gião
River, trading dropped and tuna fishing became the main
commercial activity. |
