Tavira: A lovely town that has managed to avoid mass tourism. Definitely worth a visit with excellent fish restaurants. Explore the Ilha da Tavira an offshore sandbank stretching 11km west from Tavira. The island has a handful of restaurants and bars and is reached by ferry.
The coast towards Sagres, the southwest corner of Portugal (once considered the edge of the earth by locals), is being steadily developed. The former fishing village of Salema, 20 kilometres west of Lagos, is the best bet as a base. It has a superb beach and attractive accommodation. The towns along the eastern stretch of the Algarve — Olhao, Tavira and Real de Santo Antonio — are more peaceful and have preserved a lot of their character. Olhao, the largest fishing port on the Algarve, is just eight kilometres from Faro airport, making it the ideal location from which to explore this area.

Tavira is one of the oldest towns on the Algarve with its narrow cobbled streets, a hilltop castle and 25 churches. With its inviting long beaches, typical roofs and chimneys, this picturesque town offers a beautiful view over the Gilão river and its Roman bridge. If you are browsing along the Travessa de Dona Brites, you will see splendid medieval houses, with Gothic windows and portals.
The town is separated from the sea by the island of Tavira. 11 kilometres of white sand beaches reached by a ferry from the quay during the summer. In the town centre good restaurants can be found either side of the River Gilao.
