(...) To the east of
Faro stretches the Ria Formosa, a nature reserve with a peaceful
bird sanctuary. The beaches along this part of the coast
are flatter, wider and more deserted. Olhão is a 17th
Century town built in Moorish style and known for its lively
indoor fish market. Further east is one of the Algarve’s
most elegant towns: Tavira. With its pastel-coloured houses reflected in
the gliding river, minature domes, ornate belltowers, low
bridges and twisting streets, Tavira
has a charming, almost oriental flavour. For a wealth of
sports, night-life, beautiful scenery and glorious sunshine
throughout the year, the Algarve cannot be beaten.(...) |

Tavira
Algarve's oldest town. Regarded as The Venice of Algarve.
There are many quiet beaches, including small islands along this
Eastern Algarvean coast which includes the pretty island of
Fuzeta. Tavira has little tourism but offers a good choice of
restaurants and bars. |

Tavira is a lovely old town which
stands on either side of the river Giláo. Its two halves are
connected by a seven-arched Roman bridge. A small, medieval
castle on a low hill in the center of the town presides over
all. Next to the castle is the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo,
which contains the tomb of the town´s liberator during the 13th
century Christian reconquest, Dom Paio Peres Correia.(...) |

Tavira - With its inviting long
beaches, typical roofs and chimneys, this picturesque town
offers a beautiful view over the Gilão river and its Roman
bridge. Churches to visit: Santa Maria do Castelo (13th-18th
centuries), Misericórdia (Renaissance), Nossa Senhora das Ondas
(17th century), São José (with Gothic and Manueline elements),
São Paulo and Carmo (17th-18th centuries). If you are browsing
along the Travessa de Dona Brites, you will see beautiful
medieval houses, with Gothic windows and portals.(...) |
