Ria Formosa

The Ria Formosa is a meso-tidal lagoon lying behind barrier islands. The inner submersed area is 18 400 ha at high tide, 8 400 ha of which are intertidal. Contact with the open sea is accomplished by inlets, some of which are artificial. Fresh water inputs are almost negligible due to low rainfall. It is a very dinamic system, with good tide water exchange and constant dislocation of inlets and canals.(...)
